Everyone who can get Covid-19 jab in Autumn 2024 – full list as new variant found in UK

A new variant of Covid-19, XEC, has been identified in the UK, with experts warning that it is on track to become the dominant strain in winter 2024. First seen in Germany in June, the variant has since been detected in other countries, including the UK and USA. Prof Francois Balloux from University College London stated that XEC has a slight transmission advantage but vaccines are still effective in preventing severe cases. Director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, Eric Topol, cautioned that XEC is gaining momentum and emphasized the importance of vaccination.

Despite the emergence of XEC, current vaccines are believed to offer protection against severe illness caused by the variant. To safeguard those most vulnerable to Covid-19, the NHS is offering free booster jabs. While a specific vaccine targeting XEC has not been released yet, the UK Health Security Agency recommends eligible individuals to receive the autumn booster for continued protection. Data from last year’s vaccination programme indicates a significant reduction in hospital admissions among vaccinated individuals.

The eligibility criteria for the autumn 2024 vaccine include adults aged 65 and over, residents in care homes, individuals in clinical risk groups, frontline NHS and social care workers, and those working in care homes for the elderly. The eligibility guidelines are consistent across the UK. Immunosuppressed individuals, such as transplant patients and those undergoing certain treatments, are also eligible for the vaccine. The public can check eligibility status online at nhs.uk/get-vaccine.

NHS England will provide details on accessing the autumn vaccine for eligible individuals. With Covid-19 spreading more easily in winter, receiving the vaccine this autumn is crucial for protection against severe illness during the colder months. As vaccination remains a key tool in combating the virus, it is essential for eligible individuals to take advantage of the NHS vaccination programme to safeguard themselves and others against Covid-19.
