Couple’s ‘three-week’ home renovation turns into £60,000 two-year nightmare

A retired couple’s dream of a quick home renovation turned into a nightmare, costing them nearly £40,000 more than planned and leaving their house incomplete two years later. Malcolm Carter, 72, a retired firefighter, and his wife Terri, 71, hired Nationwide Construction Specialists Ltd to renovate their home in Hythe, Southampton, in September 2022. Initially quoted £24,612.39 for the work, they ended up paying £23,891 to the building company.

Expecting the renovation to last three weeks, the Carters were shocked to return from a holiday to find their house in disarray, prompting them to live in hotels for an additional three weeks. Dissatisfied with the slow progress, Malcolm eventually asked the builders to leave. Conflict arose when the company refuted Malcolm’s claims, insisting the work was completed and signed off.

However, a report by loss adjusters indicated that finishing the build would require over £40,000 more. Despite a court order for repayment and legal actions taken, Malcolm has yet to receive any reimbursement. The couple had to hire another building company to complete the renovation, which has now cost them a total of £61,415, depleting Malcolm’s pension funds.

The stressful ordeal has taken a toll on the Carters’ mental health, with the project lingering on far beyond the initial timeline. Frequent setbacks and financial strains have forced Malcolm to sell his car and seek equity release on his home to cover the escalating costs. Still, essential work remains unfinished, underscoring the enduring challenges faced by the couple.

The case underscores the risks associated with home renovations and serves as a cautionary tale for others considering such projects. The Carters’ experience highlights the importance of thorough research, clear communication, and prudent financial planning when embarking on home improvement endeavours.
