A devastating prognosis has been handed to a mum-of-four, just months after the loss of her father and the father of her children. Melanie Nast Young, 45, is now facing a bleak six-month timeline, following the passing of her dad to lung cancer in March and her partner, Todd Young, who also succumbed to the same illness a few weeks ago. Her loved ones are rallying to support her four children, with the youngest being only 7 years old.
The tragic year has taken a toll on Melanie and her family as they navigate grief and loss. Her best friend Mischelle revealed that amidst caring for her late father and partner, Melanie’s health had been deteriorating without her realisation. She was hospitalised several times for pneumonia and was eventually diagnosed with Alpha1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency, a genetic condition impacting her lungs and liver. With a lung capacity of just 25% due to emphysema from the condition, Melanie’s health continues to decline.
Adding to the complexity of her situation is a rare genetic disorder called dystonia, which Melanie has been battling for a decade. Dystonia causes involuntary body spasms and contractions, presenting further challenges. While a lung and heart transplant could offer a glimmer of hope, the risks are high considering her health conditions and potential complications from the procedure if she survives.
Melanie’s close friend Frank Prokop has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support her and her family during this trying time. Initially intended for fulfilling Melanie’s bucket list wishes, the funds raised now serve to aid her children and partner. Contributions have poured in, totalling nearly $5,500 as supporters rally around Melanie in her time of need.
