Strictly’s Tasha Ghouri opens up on ‘struggles’ as disability leaves her with ‘weird’ training routine

Strictly’s Tasha Ghouri has shared insights into the challenges she faces due to her disability, which has led to a unique training routine. The second-ever deaf contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, following in the footsteps of Rose Ayling-Ellis, Ghouri has had to adapt her training methods to suit her specific needs. Both Ghouri and Ayling-Ellis have undergone cochlear implant surgeries to enable them to use hearing aids, allowing them to participate in the competition. Despite this technology facilitating their involvement, there are still differences in how they experience the training process compared to their hearing counterparts.

In a recent interview with Fake Bake and Press Box PR at the National Television Awards, the 26-year-old Ghouri opened up about the adjustments she has had to make in her training routine. She expressed that while she can feel the music, bass, and beats, she struggles with keeping in time with the counts. Ghouri explained, “It’s a weird way but that’s how my brain works.” Adapting to the unique demands of the competition, she has had to rely on feeling the music and mentally playing the sounds to navigate her training routine effectively.

Acknowledging the trailblazing path set by Rose Ayling-Ellis, who won the Glitterball trophy last year, Ghouri spoke about the privilege of following in her footsteps. The Love Island alum shared her admiration for Ayling-Ellis, stating, “She was the first person I really looked up to on TV.” Ayling-Ellis herself discovered her passion for dance at a young age through ballet lessons but later transitioned to commercial streetstyle dancing, honing her skills and paving the way for inclusion in mainstream entertainment.

Since gaining widespread attention through an ASOS modelling campaign, Ayling-Ellis has continued to break barriers as the first deaf contestant on Love Island earlier this year. While she may not have clinched the show’s prize, she found love with fellow contestant Andrew Le Page, who has been a source of support during Ghouri’s rigorous rehearsals for Strictly Come Dancing. Through their perseverance and dedication to their craft, both Ghouri and Ayling-Ellis have become inspirational figures in the world of entertainment, showcasing the power of determination and talent in overcoming obstacles.
