Inspectors give their verdict after visiting Welsh-language school in Cardiff

Inspectors from Estyn recently visited Ysgol Gymraeg Melin Gruffydd, a Welsh-language primary school in Cardiff, and have released their report detailing their findings. The school, located in the Whitchurch area, was commended for its inclusive and friendly environment, despite almost half of the pupils not speaking Welsh at home. The behaviour of the children was highlighted as exemplary, with the report noting the pride that pupils, staff, and parents take in creating a welcoming atmosphere.

Key strengths identified by the inspectors include the pupils’ happy and friendly nature, their natural use of the Welsh language, as well as their keen interest in local heritage and achievements, particularly in music competitions at both local and national levels. The report, published on September 12, also praised the leadership of the headteacher, who was appointed in January 2023, for fostering a caring and supportive environment that promotes teamwork among the students.

However, the report also pointed out areas for improvement, noting that the school’s self-evaluation processes need to focus more purposefully on the impact of provisions on pupils’ progress. Inspectors recommended that effective teaching practices should be shared across the school and that self-evaluation processes should be more targeted towards student progress.

Headteacher Gwyndaf Jones expressed pride in the school community’s continuous commitment and hard work, emphasising their focus on excellent pupil behaviour, inclusivity, and a strong Welsh ethos. With 469 pupils at the time of inspection, 52.9% of statutory school-age pupils speak Welsh at home. Additionally, only 5.3% of pupils are eligible for free school meals, well below the national average of 23.7%, and 2% have been identified as having additional learning needs, significantly lower than the national average of 13.2%.

Ysgol Gymraeg Melin Gruffydd remains dedicated to enhancing the educational experience for all pupils, building on the strengths highlighted in the Estyn report. The school community looks forward to further growth and success as they continue to provide a supportive and enriching learning environment for their students.
