Passengers on a Transport for Wales train faced an unexpected inconvenience recently when a new Class 197 train sprung a leak during heavy rain. The Welsh Government’s investment of £800 million in these trains, constructed by CAF in Newport, aimed to enhance travel experiences across the Wales and Borders lines. These modern trains were introduced last year to offer faster and more comfortable journeys.
During a Shrewsbury to Holyhead service on September 8th, passenger Craig Sheehan and his son experienced the leak firsthand. Despite the otherwise smooth journey, Craig found himself unimpressed as water dripped on them during the trip. Following the incident, Craig reported the leak to Transport for Wales, who promptly issued an apology and reassured passengers that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.
In response to the incident, a Transport for Wales spokesperson acknowledged the leak during heavy rainfall and indicated that it would be addressed as part of their regular train maintenance. Expressing regret for any inconvenience caused, TfW assured customers that steps would be taken to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Transport for Wales is in the process of deploying 77 Class 197 trains, comprising both two-car and three-car configurations, across their network. The manufacturer, CAF, has been approached for further comment regarding the leak incident. Passengers can expect ongoing improvements and maintenance to ensure a reliable and comfortable travel experience aboard these modern trains.
