Aldi has unveiled plans for a significant expansion of its stores, with a full list of locations released for new store setups. The supermarket chain made this announcement in its annual trading update, where it reported robust sales and profits for the previous year. Aldi is set to invest £800 million in accelerating its expansion efforts across various towns and cities in Britain.
As part of this expansion initiative, Aldi aims to open 23 new locations by the end of the year, including spots like Muswell Hill in London and Mere Green in Birmingham. This move marks the largest annual investment of £800 million in 2024 by the grocer to bolster its presence in the UK market. Currently operating over 1,000 stores, Aldi has expressed intentions to increase its footprint to 1,500 stores nationwide.
In addition to the immediate store openings, Aldi has outlined a plan to establish stores in 34 more locations by the end of 2025. Some of the highlighted areas where Aldi is set to expand include Pwllheli in Wales, Horsham in West Sussex, and Castle Douglas in Scotland, among others. The supermarket chain is specifically scouting for suitable freehold town-centre, edge-of-centre, and retail park sites for property development.
Aldi is on the lookout for sites capable of accommodating a 20,000 sq foot store with around 100 parking spaces. The ideal locations should be easily accessible from main roads, with good visibility and adequate access. Richard Thornton, Communications Director at Aldi UK, emphasised the brand’s commitment to making high-quality, affordable groceries accessible to more UK families. Thornton encouraged individuals with potential site matches to contact [email protected].
As part of its nationwide expansion strategy, Aldi is keen on engaging with communities that either lack an Aldi presence or where there is a demonstrated demand for additional stores. The company’s overarching goal is to enhance accessibility to its offerings and cater to the evolving needs of consumers across various regions. Aldi’s monumental investment and expansion plans signal a significant stride in its commitment to serving customers across the UK.
