Warning About Sunscreen Around the Eyes to Prevent Skin Cancer
Brits are being cautioned against neglecting the skin around their eyes as it could lead to a fatal disease. Certified dermatologist Olga Skydan emphasized the importance of applying sunscreen to the under eyes and eyelids to reduce the risk of skin cancer. This area is often forgotten when applying sunscreen, leaving individuals vulnerable to the fifth most common form of cancer in the UK. Olga outlined six commonly overlooked areas of the body that are at higher risk of skin cancer due to lack of protection from the sun.
“The skin around the eyes is thin and sensitive, making it more susceptible to UV damage,”
she explained.
“The lower eyelid is particularly vulnerable, given it rarely gets a break from direct sunlight exposure.”
Hence, she advised the application of sunscreen around the eyes, even when wearing sunglasses, to safeguard against harmful UV rays. Additionally, she recommended gradually applying a lightweight SPF cream around the eyes to avoid getting it in your eyes.
Here are some other areas that are often neglected when it comes to sun protection:
– Hairline and scalp: Wear a hat to protect the scalp from sun damage.
– Back of the neck: Apply sunscreen to this area, especially if it’s exposed.
– Ears: Completely cover the ears with sunscreen as they are prone to sunburn.
– Lips: Use protective lip balm with SPF 30 or higher and reapply regularly.
– Hands and feet: Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to these areas, especially if they’re exposed.
Skin cancer accounts for around 17,500 diagnoses in the UK annually, with approximately 2,300 deaths attributed to the disease. Common symptoms of skin cancer include non-healing sores, unusual skin appearance, prolonged pain, itching, bleeding, or crusting. If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s essential to consult your GP promptly to discuss your concerns and receive appropriate medical attention.
