Failing to check this one thing in your car could result in £2,500 fine and driving ban

Failing to Check Your Car Could Lead to Fine and Driving Ban

Owning a car can be expensive, with an average Brit spending about £2,835 on vehicle-related costs yearly. This includes MOT tests, services, insurance, and unexpected repairs. The Government warns of hefty penalties for those who fail to check a crucial aspect of their vehicle. You could face a fine of up to £2,500 if your car is deemed unfit to drive, even if it passed its MOT. Driving a dangerous vehicle can result in a driving ban, three penalty points, and a costly fine. The Government emphasizes the driver’s responsibility to ensure their vehicle is always roadworthy, regardless of a valid MOT certificate.

The Government website states, “You can be fined up to £2,500, be banned from driving and get three penalty points for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition.”

A vehicle is deemed dangerous if its condition poses a risk of injury due to various factors such as the vehicle’s state, purpose of use, passenger count, load distribution, or load securing method. To prevent your car from being classified as dangerous, it is recommended to perform the following checks every time you drive:

  • Ensure windscreen, windows, and mirrors are clean
  • Check that all lights are functional
  • Verify that the brakes are working
  • Refer to the vehicle’s handbook for specific check frequencies for:
    • Engine oil
    • Radiator or expansion tank water level
    • Brake fluid level
    • Battery
    • Windscreen and rear window washer bottles
    • Tyre condition and tread depth

The required tyre tread depth varies based on the vehicle type:

  • Cars, light vans, and light trailers: 1.6 millimetres (mm)
  • Motorcycles, large vehicles, and passenger-carrying vehicles: 1mm
  • Mopeds should have visible tread

By diligently conducting these checks, you can ensure your vehicle remains safe for you and others on the road, avoiding costly fines and potential driving bans. Always prioritize safety when it comes to your vehicle’s maintenance.
