A family of six found themselves in a precarious situation on an Eryri peak and had to be rescued. The group were navigating Cnicht, part of the Moelwynion mountain range, when they lost their way in poor weather conditions last month and struggled to make their descent. After several unsuccessful attempts, they decided to call for help and set up a temporary camp next to a dam wall.
The Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team came to their aid, locating them and guiding them safely off the mountain. The team commended the family’s decision to stop and seek assistance, noting that some people “feel embarrassed” about needing help, North Wales Live reported. A spokesperson from the rescue team highlighted the importance of asking for help in such situations, stating:
“We often hear from casualties that they feel embarrassed needing to be helped, but in situations like this, with tiring family members and a change in conditions, continuing can become dangerous, so asking for help and staying in one place is the best thing you can do.”
The rescue operation took place on Wednesday 21st August around 17:30, when the family reported being lost and unable to descend from the Cnicht area. The challenging weather conditions and a change of route for their descent made it extremely difficult for them to continue. Despite their efforts, they realised the need for assistance before nightfall.
Upon locating the family camped near the dam wall, the rescue team’s Remote Rescue Medical Technicians checked on their condition. The uninjured but cold family members were provided with snacks, extra layers, and confidence ropes for a safe descent down the steep terrain to the awaiting team vehicles.
The family’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritising safety in outdoor activities, especially in unpredictable mountain environments. Seeking help when needed and staying put in a secure location can make a significant difference in ensuring everyone’s well-being during such emergencies.
