Airports across Spain, Greece, France, and the rest of the EU have implemented new luggage regulations starting from September 1. These rules now apply to travellers in countries such as Italy, Portugal, and Greece, among others. The European Commission issued instructions leading to the reintroduction of the 100ml limit on liquid containers in hand luggage. This rule change affects all EU member states, including Iceland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
The European Commission has stated that the duration of this 100ml limit being in place is uncertain. Earlier this year, the UK had lifted the restrictions but had to reverse the decision due to insufficient technology readiness. New security equipment, such as Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage or C3 scanners, has been installed at EU airports. However, as a precautionary measure, larger bottles in hand luggage will not be permitted.
In June, UK airports criticised the government for reinstating the liquid limit rules, causing uncertainty for passengers and airports, especially during the peak travel season. The move affected larger airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, and Manchester, which faced logistical challenges in installing the necessary technology on time. Despite some smaller airports complying with the new rules earlier, a last-minute decision by the Department for Transport reintroduced the 100ml limit at various UK airports.
The reintroduction of the liquid restrictions primarily impacts passengers at regional airports where new security checkpoint systems were already operational. This temporary measure aims to facilitate further improvements to the checkpoint systems. Passengers are advised to check security requirements at their departure airports before travelling to ensure compliance with the regulations.
The ongoing changes in hand luggage rules highlight the importance of staying informed about travel restrictions and security measures at airports across Europe. Passengers are encouraged to monitor updates from aviation authorities and airports to ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience.
