An interactive map has recently been released showcasing where the fussiest eaters are located across the UK. The map reveals interesting insights into the eating habits of children and how this impacts family holiday plans. According to the research, children in Birmingham are identified as the fussiest eaters, while those in London are considered the most adventurous when it comes to food choices.
The study, which surveyed 2,000 parents of children aged six to 16, ranked Newcastle as the second city with the pickiest eaters, followed by Leicester. Many parents (37%) expressed challenges in dining out as a family due to their children’s limited food preferences. Furthermore, 83% highlighted the difficulty of finding suitable dining options while vacationing abroad that satisfy the entire family.
Commissioned by MSC Cruises, the research also highlighted the impact of children’s food preferences on family travel decisions. Antonio Paradiso, managing director for UK and Ireland at MSC Cruises, emphasised the significant role food plays in holiday habits and travel itineraries. He mentioned the added complexity parents face in catering to their children’s tastes when travelling, whether domestically or internationally.
One of the most common challenges parents face when dining out abroad is children refusing to try new foods (22%). Additionally, concerns about limited food options at holiday destinations (20%) and children’s complaints about unfamiliar-looking dishes (18%) were noted. The research indicated that food options in a foreign location influence travel decisions for 63% of parents, with 14% willing to cancel a holiday if sufficient food choices are unavailable.
To encourage children to explore different foods, certain regions in the UK adopt unique strategies. Residents in the south-west are more inclined to involve their children in cooking activities at a young age (58%), while Liverpudlians utilise sweets and familiar foods as incentives for trying new dishes (45%). Despite these efforts, some parents find it frustrating (25%) when children resist trying foods they may enjoy.
The study also sought feedback from children themselves, revealing that over half (54%) have declined trying new foods because they appeared unconventional. An overwhelming majority (59%) expressed a desire to eat pizza daily while on holiday. MSC Cruises, known for its variety of dining options onboard, aims to provide families with diverse food choices to enhance their travel experiences.
