Wood burning stove owners warned as one in 10 are at risk

Wood burning stove owners across the UK are being warned about the risks associated with neglecting their chimneys, as new research from HETAS reveals that 1 in 10 owners of wood burners and other solid fuel stoves wait years before sweeping their chimneys, putting their homes at risk of catching fire.

The findings come during HETAS’s Chimney Fire Safety Week (CFSW), highlighting the importance of regular maintenance. Despite a decrease in chimney fires, there were still 2,126 reported cases in England in 2023/2024. With over 1.5 million wood burners in the UK and around 200,000 sold annually, the need for proper chimney care is evident.

Experts advise that chimneys should be swept at least twice a year for wood burners and once every 12 months for those using smokeless fuels, regardless of chimney type or lining. Using the right fuel with low moisture content and ensuring correct appliance installation and maintenance are crucial aspects of stove ownership.

CEO of HETAS, Bruce Allen, emphasised the importance of timely maintenance, recommending chimney sweeping just before the heating season begins in September. He explained that neglecting maintenance can lead to a higher risk of chimney fires, especially after periods of wet weather.

Furthermore, the research found that 41% of wood burner owners have never serviced their appliances, with some attempting DIY maintenance. Concerningly, over 40% of stove owners do not ensure their appliance is a ‘Cleaner Choice’ certified stove, which burns clean and low carbon fuels, benefiting both public health and the environment.

In addition to maintenance, fuel sourcing is also a critical aspect of stove ownership. The study showed that 63% of owners who do not purchase fuel from traditional retailers produce their own firewood by cutting trees or collecting from woodlands. Bruce highlighted the importance of using certified fuel that meets government regulations and ensuring appliance compliance with Ecodesign regulations.

Overall, proper maintenance, correct fuel usage, and adherence to regulations are essential for safe and efficient wood burner operation. By following these guidelines, stove owners can reduce the risk of chimney fires and ensure both their safety and environmental impact are optimised.
