A man who took his painting to the Antiques Roadshow after buying it in a job lot for £18 was floored after discovering its true value. The latest episode of the show, which sees experts value antiques brought along by members of the public, was filmed at Cromford Mills, Derbyshire, and aired on Sunday night on BBC One.
The guest said they bought the bundle six years ago after spotting a print among the lot, but fell in love with the painting and decided to keep it. The rest was donated to charity shops. The man said part of his attraction to the painting was the signature at the bottom, a clear sign it was a painting rather than a print, and he hung it in his hall.
Expert Lawrence Hendra valued the painting at £3,000 to £5,000, leaving the guests delighted as they gasped in shock: “No, no, no! Okay, thank you, Lawrence!”
Elsewhere on the show, one guest brought along their stunning jewellery collection, revealing she thought one ring was costume jewellery and had purchased it years ago for £200. Meanwhile, regarding another piece of jewellery, the guest asked expert Joanna Hardy how they made it look like platinum, to which Joanna pointed out that it is in fact platinum complete with diamonds. The guest then revealed that the rest of her jewellery she had paid £1,500 for – and Joanna valued it all at £15,000.
However, the surprises were far from over as Joanna added that a brooch in the collection was worth £5,000 to £7,000 while another brooch was worth £3,000 to £5,000, adding that another ring was £2,500. Joanna then revealed that in total the entire collection was worth £25,000. The guest said: “Oh never! Sorry, I nearly swore! Really? My goodness me!”, adding: “I just can’t believe this. Crumbs, crumbs!”
Expert Joanna was also left delighted, adding: “You’ve done so well, it really has brightened up my day. Thank you so so much!”
