Cardiff City player’s contract has been terminated with immediate effect. The right-back, Mahlon Romeo, did not play during pre-season or the current season after Wales Online exposed the homophobic nature of his abuse towards police officers following a drink-drive arrest. The club released a statement confirming the termination, saying, “Cardiff City and Mahlon Romeo have agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent to allow the player to seek other opportunities.” Romeo had made 51 appearances over two seasons for the Bluebirds and is now departing to pursue first-team chances elsewhere.
In a statement issued back in June, Romeo apologised for his actions, expressing deep regret for the incident and explaining that his comments did not reflect his beliefs or character. Cardiff City manager Erol Bulut had been waiting for the board’s decision on Romeo’s future, but just before the transfer window closed, the club confirmed Romeo’s immediate departure. This leaves Perry Ng and 17-year-old Ronan Kpakio as the primary options in that position, with summer signing Calum Chambers also able to fill the role. Raheem Conte is expected to leave on loan soon.
Romeo’s departure comes after a tumultuous period following his arrest earlier this year. His contract termination signifies a fresh start for both the player and the club. Cardiff City FC wished Romeo well in his future endeavours, highlighting the need for mutual consent in parting ways and acknowledging Romeo’s contributions during his time at the club. The player’s departure leaves opportunities for others to step up in his absence, reshaping the team dynamics as they move forward into the season.
