A nutritionist has shared valuable insights on achieving successful weight loss, focusing on six key steps that could help individuals shed extra pounds. Obesity rates in the UK have been on the rise, with 64% of adults in England estimated to be overweight or living with obesity in 2022 to 2023. This concerning trend has been gradually increasing since 2015.
To address this issue, the nutritionist referred to a study published in the Obesity Reviews journal in 2020, which analysed behavioural and psychological factors contributing to weight loss maintenance and long-term success. The study involved nearly 7,000 participants with an average BMI of 34.3, classified as living with obesity. On average, participants successfully lost 20% of their total body weight and sustained it over several years.
The nutritionist highlighted six significant behaviours crucial for weight loss success. These included meal planning, having a regular breakfast, increasing vegetable intake, reducing sugar and fat consumption, and engaging in regular physical activity. These behaviours were identified as key factors correlated with weight loss success and maintenance.
In addition to these behaviours, the NHS recommends various strategies for healthy weight loss, such as being active for 150 minutes a week, consuming 5 portions of fruits and vegetables daily, aiming for gradual weight loss, reading food labels for healthier options, swapping sugary drinks for water, and reducing intake of high-sugar and high-fat foods. Sharing your weight loss plan with a trusted individual for support and motivation is also beneficial.
If individuals are concerned about their weight, it is advised to consult with a GP for personalised guidance and support. By incorporating these steps and recommendations into their daily routine, individuals can work towards achieving their weight loss goals effectively and sustainably, promoting overall health and well-being.
