Not fixing a broken phone screen could hurt more than your pocket

The true cost of having a cracked or smashed phone screen has been revealed in new research by MoneySuperMarket. The research unveils that five million people in the UK are living with a smashed phone, highlighting the commonality of this issue. People’s perceptions of someone with a broken phone screen shift if they don’t repair it within six weeks. More than a quarter of individuals find having a smashed phone screen ’embarrassing’, with 12% stating they would avoid a second date with someone who had one.

According to the study, 56% of gadget insurance claims in the last 12 months were for shattered screens, indicating a significant financial impact. University student Lauren, 20, shares her experience, expressing how a cracked screen influenced her dating decision. She reflects on how the cracked screen symbolised deeper issues in the person’s life, affecting their compatibility. David McDermottroe, an insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, emphasises how common smartphone ownership is and how easily a screen can crack in everyday situations.

“The research shows 96% of UK adults have a smartphone, and a cracked screen can happen in an instant if your phone slips from your hand or falls out of your bag or pocket,” McDermottroe explains, underlining the need for prompt screen repairs to avoid potential judgements and inconveniences. The study sheds light on the social and practical implications of not addressing a broken phone screen promptly, suggesting a broader impact beyond just a cosmetic concern.

As the reliance on smartphones continues to grow, maintaining their physical integrity is becoming increasingly crucial to avoid negative perceptions or missed opportunities. With millions of people navigating life with shattered screens, the research serves as a reminder of the importance of timely screen repairs to safeguard both the device and personal interactions.
