An expert has cautioned that following a “fully vegan diet” may lead to adverse consequences, including “brain fog” and other side effects, if nutrient deficiencies are not managed properly. While a fully vegan diet can provide various health benefits such as enhancing mood and gut health, potential drawbacks need to be considered, according to the expert.
Chris Dubberley from Incontinence Shop emphasised the importance of addressing deficiencies that may arise from a fully vegan diet. He highlighted key nutrients like Vitamin B12, iron, zinc, and protein as crucial for overall health. Dubberley warned that inadequacies in these vitamins and minerals could result in symptoms like “brain fog and low mood”. Regarding protein intake, he underscored its significance in metabolism, immune function, and muscle growth, advising individuals to incorporate a variety of plant-based proteins such as legumes, tofu, brown rice, quinoa, and nuts into their diet.
Despite the potential challenges, a fully vegan diet offers numerous health benefits. Dubberley explained that a plant-based diet rich in antioxidants, folate, and magnesium can support a healthy gut microbiome, potentially improving gut health and mental well-being by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. Furthermore, the diverse range of plant-based foods in a vegan diet can help maintain a balanced gut microbiome, which in turn facilitates the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, known as the “feel-good” hormone, ultimately enhancing mood.
