More than 200 firefighters tackle huge blaze as residents told ‘keep windows shut’

More than 200 firefighters are currently battling a massive blaze at a block of flats in London. The London Fire Brigade reported that forty fire engines and around 225 firefighters are at the scene in Freshwater Road, Dagenham. The building appears to be a mix of residential and commercial units, with the fire affecting various floors and the roof. Station Commander Alan Bendell advised local residents to keep their windows and doors shut due to heavy smoke production.

Two turntable ladders are being used as aerial water towers to help extinguish the fire from above. The road in the vicinity has been closed to traffic, and fire crews from neighbouring stations are also responding to the incident. Thick black smoke and flames can be seen emanating from the building, while the London Fire Brigade has deployed a drone to assess the situation further. Ambulances are on site, and the London Ambulance Service has reported treating four individuals, two of whom have been taken to a hospital for further care.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, and authorities are actively working to contain and extinguish the flames. Efforts to concentrate on specific areas of the building are underway, with ongoing assessments to strategise firefighting operations effectively. Residents and commuters are advised to steer clear of the affected area to facilitate firefighting operations and ensure public safety.

The situation remains under investigation as emergency services work diligently to manage the fire and its impact on the building and surrounding community. Further updates on the incident are expected as the situation unfolds, with authorities urging caution and vigilance from the public in response to the ongoing emergency.
