Tragedy Strikes as Four Outdoors Lovers Meet their Fate during a Weekend Getaway in Wales
A weekend trip to Pembrokeshire in late October 2021 turned into a nightmare for four outdoor enthusiasts – Morgan Rogers, Andrea Powell, Nicola Wheatley, and Paul O’Dwyer. They left home with the hopes of enjoying a break from their daily routines, organized by Nerys Lloyd through her company, Salty Dog Co. The planned activities included hiking and paddleboarding along the River Cleddau, despite adverse weather conditions and lack of adequate safety measures.
The ill-fated excursion took a deadly turn as the group of eight embarked on the paddleboarding trip, with some members not wearing wetsuits or life jackets. Nerys Lloyd, the trip organizer, led the group towards the Haverfordwest town weir, a ferocious obstacle in the river. Despite her knowledge of a fish ramp as a safer passage, communication breakdown and lack of preparation led to a tragic outcome.
In a terrifying moment, Andrea, Morgan, and Nicola were swept into the weir, losing their lives in the turbulent waters. Paul, in a brave attempt to rescue them, also perished in the powerful currents. The survivors, Gemma Cox, Jemma Dugdale, Melody Johns, and Kerry O’Dwyer, narrowly escaped the same fate through sheer luck.
After four years of legal proceedings, Nerys Lloyd was convicted of gross negligence manslaughter and sentenced to 10 years and six months. Her disregard for safety warnings and insistence on proceeding with the dangerous paddleboarding trip ultimately cost the lives of four individuals. The court revealed the avoidable nature of the tragedy and the devastating impact on the victims’ families.
Andrea Powell, a dental therapist known for her caring nature and sense of humour, tragically lost her life during the excursion. Her organs were later donated, saving the lives of five individuals. Morgan Rogers, a young woman with a promising future in the fire and rescue service, left behind a grieving family and friends who cherished her kind spirit and infectious laughter.
Nicola Wheatley, a loving mother to two young children, celebrated her 40th birthday before meeting her untimely end at the weir. Her family expressed deep sorrow over the loss and called for accountability for the decisions that led to the fatal incident. Paul O’Dwyer, a respected electrical engineer and former army sergeant, displayed courage and selflessness in his final moments trying to rescue others.
The court recognised the bravery of Joel Williams, who attempted to save the victims during the tragedy, and may receive special recognition for his efforts. The judge commended the dignity and strength shown by the families of the deceased throughout the harrowing legal process. The emotional impact of the loss resonated through heartfelt tributes shared by loved ones and friends, highlighting the lasting legacy of those who perished on that fateful weekend in Wales.
