The ‘waterfall’ of prosecco and Costa cups created by ‘half-wits’ on a Welsh mountain

A shocking situation has emerged on the popular Welsh mountain, Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), where litter has tarnished the natural beauty of the Trinity Gullies on Clogwyn Y Garnedd. The gullies, located just below the summit, have become a dumping ground for brightly coloured clothes, plastics, and food wrappers, prompting outrage among locals and visitors alike. The litter issue has been exacerbated by the mountain’s popularity as an “Instagram magnet” and criticism of the Hafod Eryri summit cafe.

Calls for action include banning disposable cups and addressing the cafe’s product range, which includes items like Prosecco and beers that often end up littering the mountain. Despite efforts by volunteers from Caru Eryri to clean up the area, litter continues to be a persistent problem, with issues such as lack of bins due to access restrictions and the reliance on single-use plastic bottles. The litter issue not only mars the landscape but also poses environmental challenges.

Efforts to tackle the litter problem are underway, with a planned clean-up operation on Trinity Gullies involving abseiling experts and experienced walkers. The operation, led by the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) in collaboration with various groups, aims to address the waste left behind by over 600,000 annual visitors to the mountain. The BMC emphasises the need to protect not just the mountain’s natural beauty but also its vital habitats for Arctic Alpine plant species.

The litter issue on Yr Wyddfa highlights the importance of responsible waste disposal and the impact of human actions on the environment. While most visitors adhere to proper waste management, some individuals continue to litter due to laziness or thoughtlessness. Weather conditions, such as strong winds, also contribute to litter dispersal, making it challenging to address the problem effectively.

As efforts to clean up Trinity Gullies and other littered areas on Yr Wyddfa continue, the focus remains on preserving the mountain’s ecological significance and maintaining its beauty for future generations to enjoy. The BMC’s ongoing conservation initiatives underscore the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding natural environments against the detrimental effects of littering.
