The gullies, located just below the summit, have become a dumping ground for brightly coloured clothes, plastics, and food wrappers, prompting outrage among locals and visitors alike. The litter issue has been exacerbated by the mountain’s popularity as an “Instagram magnet” and criticism of the Hafod Eryri summit cafe.
Calls for action include banning disposable cups and addressing the cafe’s product range, which includes items like Prosecco and beers that often end up littering the mountain. Despite efforts by volunteers from Caru Eryri to clean up the area, litter continues to be a persistent problem, with issues such as lack of bins due to access restrictions and the reliance on single-use plastic bottles. The litter issue not only mars the landscape but also poses environmental challenges.
Efforts to tackle the litter problem are underway, with a planned clean-up operation on Trinity Gullies involving abseiling experts and experienced walkers.
