Over £200,000 Raised for Medical Student who had Limbs Amputated
A generous fundraising effort has amassed over £200,000 in just three days to support Lily McGarry, a 23-year-old medical student, in her journey to recover after undergoing the amputation of all four limbs due to a severe blood infection. Lily, who was known for her love for surfing, swimming, and running, had her life drastically altered in January when she was rushed to the hospital after feeling unwell, only to be diagnosed with meningococcal septicaemia, a dangerous blood infection.
Lily McGarry, currently in her third year at Cardiff University, was described by her family as a kind, active, and positive individual. Her health took a sudden downturn on January 14, leading to an urgent hospitalisation where she was diagnosed with meningococcal septicaemia. Following two cardiac arrests and a two-week coma, Lily began showing slight signs of improvement at the University Hospital Wales. However, an MRI scan revealed multiple infarcts in her brain, spleen, and liver, resulting in the need for several operations that ultimately left her as a quadruple amputee.
