‘I worked at Greggs for 18 years, now I’ve opened my own deli’

Janine Owens, who spent 18 years working at Greggs, has opened her own deli in Pontypridd. She launched Little Pickers Deli in the first week of August, following three years of running her own cafe in Bridge Street. Owens spoke to Wales Online about her passion for food and the journey that led her to open her deli. Having previously managed an area for Greggs, she transitioned into the food industry by taking over a friend’s business of selling grazing boxes, which became a resounding success.

Amid the cost-of-living crisis, Owens faced challenges in maintaining competitive pricing while offering quality products. Despite this, the support from the Pontypridd community has been invaluable. The cafe and deli have become popular spots for customers seeking locally sourced Welsh produce and a unique culinary experience. The deli, located just a few doors down from the cafe, was conceptualised last year when the opportunity for additional space arose. After a quick turnaround, the deli opened its doors to the public in August.

Owens hopes the deli will offer something distinct to the community, filling a gap in the local market for a dedicated place to purchase specialty goods. With a focus on providing a different experience for customers, Owens emphasises the sense of community fostered at her establishments. The deli showcases a range of produce used in the grazing boxes, appealing to those seeking special gifts or unique food items. As Pontypridd’s only delicatessen, Owens aims to establish it as a go-to destination for quality, locally sourced products.

Customers have praised the cafe’s welcoming atmosphere and diverse menu, which includes breakfast and lunch options alongside a wine bar on weekends. Despite the initial challenges, Janine remains positive about the future of her business ventures. Her dedication to offering a unique culinary experience in Pontypridd has garnered support from both regulars and newcomers. Little Pickers Deli represents Owens’ entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to providing a fresh dining experience in the town.
