Woman fights for life as vomiting bug on Turkey holiday ends in critical illness

A woman fighting for her life after contracting a severe illness on holiday in Turkey has sparked a fundraising campaign to cover her mounting medical expenses. Ronni Douglas, 26, was enjoying an all-inclusive trip to Bodrum when she was suddenly struck by intense stomach pains and uncontrollable vomiting just three days into her vacation. Rushed to the hospital, Ronni was diagnosed with a perforated oesophagus, a life-threatening condition that has left her unable to travel back to the UK until her health improves.

Facing a staggering £5,000 bill for initial care and potential surgery, Ronni’s family has been left in financial turmoil. Her sister, Fallon Douglas, launched a GoFundMe page to crowdsource funds for her treatment, with donations reaching over £3,900 so far. However, the family is still in urgent need of further financial assistance to cover the escalating medical costs.

Ronni had embarked on the holiday on August 12 with her mother and young nieces but was hospitalised shortly after arrival due to her deteriorating health. Fallon recalled the distressing situation, with Ronni experiencing ongoing sickness and being unable to eat or use the bathroom.

The family, who initially lacked travel insurance, only secured cover two days into the trip, leaving them responsible for Ronni’s medical fees. Dawn, Ronni’s mother, has already spent nearly £1,000 on initial expenses, including repatriating Ronni’s young relatives. With additional charges accruing as Ronni remains hospitalised, the family is uncertain about the final bill’s total.

Fallon highlighted the communication challenges with hospital staff due to the language barrier, further complicating the situation. Expressing gratitude for any public support, she emphasised the critical nature of Ronni’s emergency treatment, underscoring the need for financial aid during this challenging time.

The family’s crowdfunding appeal aims to alleviate the burden of Ronni’s medical costs and ensure she receives the necessary care to overcome her current health crisis. As the community rallies around Ronni, donations of any amount are welcomed to support her journey to recovery and alleviate the financial strain on her loved ones.
