Cardiff Train passengers warned of disruption as major station closes for Metro work

Train passengers have been warned of disruptions as a major station, Cardiff Queen Street, is set to close due to work on the South Wales Metro. The station, located in the city centre, will be closed on Sunday, August 25, as engineering work begins. This closure will affect several rail services and is expected to continue intermittently until November.

The South Wales Metro aims to provide a modern, efficient, and sustainable mode of transport. Transport for Wales (TfW) has been carrying out significant engineering and infrastructure work since 2020 to upgrade the rail network and introduce new trains. Passengers are advised to check their journey plans due to the disruptions caused by the ongoing engineering work.

Following the closure on August 25, Cardiff Queen Street station is scheduled to close again between October 27 and November 1. Additionally, further closures are planned for Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1. Engineering works will impact services on the Rhymney and Coryton lines, with a rail replacement service operating between Cardiff Central and Rhymney.

These closures are part of the efforts to upgrade the rail network and introduce new trains to enhance reliability, speed, and accessibility. The South Wales Metro project aims to improve connectivity and provide better access to various services. Transport for Wales plans to increase the frequency of weekday and Sunday services on different lines to enhance the transport system.

By completing the first phase of the South Wales Metro by 2026, it is expected that more trains will run per hour, offering improved connectivity for passengers. The project aims to create a network of integrated rail, bus, and walking/cycling routes for a hassle-free travel experience. Passengers are encouraged to stay informed about the closures and replacement services by checking with Transport for Wales before their journeys.
