Throughout the next five days, a total of 530 teams from various schools across Wales will engage in fierce competition as they battle it out on the rugby fields in Pontcanna and Llandaff. The tournament boasts a diverse range of competitions catering to students from years seven to 13, as well as primary school children in years five and six, along with those from additional learning needs schools.

The action-packed event officially kicked off today (Monday) and will run until Friday, April 11. The opening day saw the commencement of the boys and girls year 12 and 13 tournaments, alongside the years five and six open contact games for schools based in Cardiff and the Vale. Each game is divided into two seven-minute halves, with group stage matches determining the teams advancing to the knockout rounds.

With a total of 19 pitches and six mini pitches dedicated to hosting the tournament, games will be taking place continuously throughout the day. In addition to the rugby matches, there will be catering facilities available for both participants and spectators, as well as exhibitor stands for event sponsors to showcase their offerings.

The collaboration between Urdd and the Welsh Rugby Union has been instrumental in bringing this event to life for the past two decades. Initially established by Urdd, the tournament has gradually expanded over the years, necessitating a minimum of 16 pitches to accommodate the growing number of participants. As a result, the event is now held at Pontcanna and Llandaff fields in Cardiff.

Garry Lewis, Director of Sports and Apprenticeships at Urdd Gobaith Cymru, highlighted the inclusive nature of the tournament, with special emphasis on involving additional learning needs schools. Lewis mentioned that the event is designed to be entirely inclusive, with various initiatives such as a legacy project for Cardiff areas enhancing the overall experience for participants.

Urdd’s Chief Executive, Siân Lewis, reiterated the importance of inclusivity in rugby, emphasising that the sport should be accessible to all. The tournament’s format ensures equal opportunities for all participants, regardless of age or gender, embodying the core value of inclusivity that Urdd aims to promote.

For those unable to attend the event in person, supporters can follow the tournament via a live stream on YouTube. With a packed schedule featuring a range of age groups and competitions, the 2025 Urdd WRU 7s Rugby Tournament promises an action-filled and thrilling experience for both players and spectators alike.
