A man accused of stirring up racial hatred through a Facebook post has appeared in court to deny the offence. Jamie Michael, 45, of Tonypandy, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday where he pleaded not guilty to publishing threatening material on a Facebook account, intending to stir up racial hatred.
The offence is alleged to have happened on or around July 31, around the same time disorder was taking place across parts of the UK in response to false claims that the person accused of the Southport fatal stabbings of three girls had arrived in the UK illegally on a small boat. In reality, the person charged with the girls’ murder is a Cardiff-born 17-year-old.
After entering his not guilty plea, Michael was remanded in custody until his trial at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on February 3, 2025. The Recorder of Cardiff Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke noted there is due to be a bail application made upon the defendant’s behalf, which will be discussed at a future hearing.
