Temperatures to hit 22°C after sunny March smashes records

Temperatures are set to soar in Wales with highs of 22°C as the country revels in the aftermath of one of the sunniest March months on record. The Met Office has reported that a considerable amount of sunshine bathed the nation during the past few weeks, making it a bright and dry period for much of Wales and the UK as a whole. England celebrated its sunniest March since records were first kept in 1910, with Wales following closely behind, marking its second sunniest March in history. All four nations of the UK experienced above-average sunshine hours during the third month of the year, with the UK as a whole achieving its third sunniest month ever. North Wales and parts of central and eastern England witnessed at least 150% of their average sunshine hours during this exceptional period. Moreover, March was exceptionally dry, with Scotland being the only region to receive more than half of its usual rainfall. In comparison, many areas of southern England and parts of South Wales received as little as a fifth of their typical rainfall for March. In Wales, it was the fourth driest March since records began in 1836, with only 23.9mm of rainfall registered throughout the month. This trend extended across the UK, with multiple counties experiencing one of the driest March periods in history.

Looking ahead to the first week of April, the Met Office predicts that the warm weather will continue across Wales, particularly on Friday when temperatures are expected to exceed 20°C. Locations such as Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, and Swansea may reach highs of 21°C, while Burry Port and Chepstow could enjoy temperatures as high as 22°C. However, coastal areas in the north of the country may experience slightly cooler temperatures, ranging from 16-17°C off the coast of Anglesey to 18-19°C along the mainland coast from Bangor to Colwyn Bay. Despite the promising forecast, some parts of Wales may encounter rain showers on Thursday evening, affecting southwestern regions. According to the Met Office, these showers are expected to clear by Friday morning, paving the way for a mostly dry and sunny weekend and the following week. While the outlook remains positive for sunshine and warmth, temperatures are likely to decrease as the new week progresses, with the possibility of chilly nights and occasional breeziness. Nevertheless, the upcoming week is set to offer pleasant conditions for enjoying the outdoors and making the most of the spring weather.
