A Cardiff woman, Funmi Oduwaiye, found herself disabled after a knee operation went wrong. Despite this setback, she has defied the odds and is now on her way to the Paralympics. Funmi, 21 years old, is set to compete in shot put and discus just over two years after taking up parasport following the failed surgery.
Originally a talented basketball player, Funmi’s dreams were shattered by the botched knee operation. Multiple surgeries left her in extreme pain and paralysed in her right leg from the knee down. However, with determination and the support of figures like the late Anthony Hughes MBE, a prominent disability sport icon in Wales, Funmi discovered a new passion in shot put and discus.
With training and funding from the National Lottery, Funmi has excelled in the sport, earning top placements in world championships. Her journey to the Paralympics showcases resilience and dedication, proving that setbacks can lead to remarkable achievements. She credits her success to trust in God and staying focused on her goals.
Looking ahead to Paris, Funmi is excited to experience the athletes’ village and compete on a global stage. She hopes to perform at her best and enjoy the experience, regardless of the outcome. Her inspiring story is being featured in a Channel 4 documentary, offering a glimpse into her preparation for the Paralympics.
As Funmi reflects on her challenging journey, she remains grateful for the support that has guided her to the pinnacle of parasport.
