Swansea has released its GCSE results for its maintained schools, surpassing the Wales national average. Year 11 students in the city are celebrating results that are well above the national average. This year marks the first set of “normal” exams since 2019, following exam disruptions due to Covid in 2020 and 2021. Despite an overall dip in results across Wales, Swansea has outperformed the national average.
The statistics for Swansea’s summer 2024 GCSE results are impressive. The city achieved a 23.4% A*-A grade in WJEC exams compared to the 19.2% for Wales as a whole. Over 75% of students secured A* to C grades in 17 out of 39 subjects. Additionally, Swansea boasted a 96.7% pass rate at grades A* to G, exceeding the Welsh pass rate of 96.6%. A*-A grades were awarded to over a third of all entrants in 14 subjects.
Swansea Council’s cabinet member for education and learning, Robert Smith, commended the students on their achievements and praised the efforts of schools and teachers in achieving these results. He expressed congratulations to all pupils, not just those taking GCSEs, but also those pursuing alternative qualifications.
Council member Smith highlighted the various paths available to young people in Swansea, including continuing education, vocational training, apprenticeships, and employment. He extended his best wishes to all students for their future endeavours, irrespective of the path they choose.
The success of Swansea’s students reflects the dedication and hard work put in by both students and educators. With results surpassing the national average, Swansea continues to demonstrate academic excellence and support for its young learners.
