Council Leader Advocates for Metro Investment in Valleys
Council Leader, Councillor Andrew Morgan, of Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT), has emphasised the importance of the South Wales Metro in bringing investment and opportunities back into the Valleys. During a recent meeting of RCT Council’s overview and scrutiny committee, Councillor Morgan expressed his vision for the Metro to not only facilitate transportation out of the Valleys but also to attract investment and prospects back into the region. He highlighted the significance of integrated ticketing systems, such as the through ticket scheme for bus and train services running in the Rhondda Fach area, in improving local journeys and enhancing bus connections.
Councillor Morgan stressed the need for the Metro to operate bidirectionally, serving not just as a means to reach Cardiff quickly and comfortably but also to support transport within the Valleys. He identified Porth as a potential key hub for transportation, citing existing office facilities in the town centre and promoting active travel initiatives. The council leader emphasised the importance of maximising the benefits of the Metro investment for Valleys communities. He stated, “I really do not see and do not want the Metro just to be about taking people out of the Valleys and taking spend out of the Valleys. It’s got to be about bringing investment and bringing prospects back into the Valleys.”
Discussing further enhancements to Metro services, Councillor Morgan mentioned potential extensions of late-night and weekend services to better cater to the needs of Valley residents. He envisions the Metro as a transformative opportunity for the region, providing connected transportation infrastructure on a scale previously unseen. With the prospect of increased train frequency and improved bus connectivity, Valleys communities stand to benefit from enhanced accessibility and economic opportunities.
By fostering a comprehensive approach to transport planning and investment, Councillor Morgan aims to revitalise the Valleys and attract sustainable growth. His advocacy for the Metro aligns with a broader strategy to leverage infrastructure projects for the long-term prosperity of communities in the region. The emphasis on mutual connectivity, local accessibility, and economic development underscores a strategic vision for the Valleys’ future within the evolving transport landscape of South Wales.
As discussions around Metro expansion and service improvements continue, stakeholders are encouraged to consider the holistic impact of transportation initiatives on local economies and community well-being. The commitment to leveraging the Metro as a catalyst for investment and opportunity signals a proactive approach to addressing regional disparities and unlocking the full potential of the Valleys. With a focus on inclusive growth and sustainable development, the vision outlined by Councillor Andrew Morgan underscores a commitment to building a vibrant and connected future for the Valleys.
