Teen with rare condition who has undergone 40 surgeries achieves GCSE success

A teenager from Swansea has defied the odds by achieving great success in her GCSE exams, despite facing significant health challenges. Martha Pass, a student at Bishop Gore School in Mumbles, has been living with a rare condition called Vacterl syndrome, which has necessitated her to undergo a staggering 40 surgeries at a young age.

Vacterl syndrome, affecting only a small proportion of newborns, comprises a range of medical issues including vertebral defects, anorectal anomalies, cardiac defects, and limb abnormalities. Martha’s resilience and determination have been evident throughout her journey, having experienced kidney failure and numerous medical procedures to address her condition.

Despite enduring frequent hospital visits and missing substantial amounts of school time, Martha has managed to secure impressive GCSE results with four Bs and four Cs. Her hard work and commitment to her studies have paid off, with the teenager attributing her success to her newfound love for learning fostered at Bishop Gore School. In recognition of her perseverance, Martha was presented with a special award for overcoming adversity.

Martha’s accomplishment is even more commendable considering the challenging circumstances she has faced due to her health condition. The head teacher of Bishop Gore School, Helen Burgum, expressed pride in the pupils’ achievements, particularly highlighting the exceptional results attained by a significant number of students. With 77% of pupils achieving at least five A* to C grades, the school celebrated a remarkable success rate this year.

Martha’s story serves as an inspiration to many, showcasing the power of determination and perseverance in the face of adversity. Her resilience and academic achievements are a testament to her strength of character and unwavering dedication to her education. Despite the obstacles she has encountered, Martha’s positive attitude and drive to succeed have propelled her towards a bright future filled with promise.
