Historic Hotel Faces Impending Demolition After Years of Abandonment
A prominent historic hotel in Tywyn, Wales, which once hosted famous guests such as John Lennon and Yoko Ono, is now on the brink of demolition after lying empty for over ten years. The Corbett Arms Hotel, a symbol of pride in the coastal village since its establishment in the 19th century, has sadly fallen into disrepair since its closure in 2011.
Local residents have observed the gradual decay of the Corbett Arms Hotel over the years, with its exterior walls showing signs of cracking, the roof and walls deteriorating, and the structure being consumed by ivy and weeds. The once vibrant establishment now stands as a shadow of its former self, with nature reclaiming its space inside the building. The bar, once lively with patrons, now houses vegetation, while guest rooms are overrun with pigeon droppings and the stairwell has collapsed.
The hotel’s condition has worsened to the point where emergency services have been warned against entering the premises due to safety concerns. Two years ago, Cyngor Gwynedd issued a “dangerous structure” notice for the site. However, due to unresolved issues surrounding ownership, primarily tied up in probate, the council’s ability to intervene effectively has been limited.
In response to the deteriorating state of the Corbett Arms Hotel and the risks it poses to public safety, Cyngor Gwynedd has announced its intention to seek a demolition order for the listed building. A spokesperson for the council expressed their concerns, stating that efforts were made to preserve and refurbish the Grade II listed building, but ongoing degradation and recent collapses have left them with no choice but to pursue demolition.
Gareth Jones, Assistant Head of Cyngor Gwynedd Environment Department, emphasised the council’s commitment to preserving the town’s heritage while prioritising public safety. Despite recognising the significance of the historic building and the community’s attachment to it, the decision to apply for listed building consent for demolition and proceed with emergency demolition works has been deemed necessary.
The council will be liaising with relevant authorities, including Cadw and the Royal Commission, to undertake the demolition responsibly. Nearby residents will be informed of planned works, which may include temporary road closures, to ensure public safety. While the Corbett Arms Hotel holds nostalgic memories for many and is appreciated for its picturesque overgrown exterior, the reality inside paints a different picture, with urban explorers describing an “apocalypse vibe.”
As the fate of the Corbett Arms Hotel hangs in the balance, it serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges in preserving historical landmarks amidst changing times and evolving priorities. Despite efforts to salvage the once glorious establishment, the inevitable demolition looms large, marking the end of an era for this iconic piece of Tywyn’s history.
