A woman in Wales received a devastating diagnosis when she was told she had less than a year to live after doctors discovered she had incurable breast cancer. Nicola Heart, 37, was informed that the cancer had spread to her bones, liver, and lungs, urging her to seek hospice care. However, nearly five years since her diagnosis, Nicola continues to fight against the odds, living each day to the fullest. She reflects, “I thought my life was over. That turned out to be the furthest thing from the truth. I’ve had to learn to let go, accept what I can’t control, and embrace each moment as it comes.”
Despite facing extensive bone metastases, painful liver issues, and difficulty breathing due to lung complications, Nicola remains resilient. She describes the pain as “absolutely unbearable,” but finds strength in her moments of joy and connection with her eight-year-old son. Nicola’s son is her main source of motivation, as she navigates through gruelling treatments and setbacks. She shares, “He loves sports, and I love watching him play. He keeps me going. I’ve had to accept that I’m not in control of this disease. I live in the now.”
Nicola’s journey has been a rollercoaster of medical procedures and challenges, from blood transfusions to chemotherapy. Despite reaching the final treatment options, she has embraced a new treatment called Enhertu, which has shown promising results. Nicola expresses, “My pain has gone away, the metastases in my lungs have disappeared, my liver is shrinking again, and my tumour markers are coming down. I went from being put on hospice to where I am today – able to do most of the things I want to do and not be in pain.”
Throughout her battle with cancer, Nicola has been transparent about her symptoms, aiming to raise awareness and encourage vigilance among others. She recognises the importance of early detection and urges people to take note of warning signs such as nipple discharge, changes in breast size, lumps in the armpit, skin texture changes, unexplained weight loss, excessive fatigue, and persistent illness recovery difficulties. Nicola voices her determination to keep fighting, even as she transitions to IV chemotherapy after years of oral treatment. She acknowledges the darkness but remains focused on overcoming the challenges ahead.
Despite the physical and emotional toll of her journey, Nicola’s resilience shines through. While she grapples with the potential loss of her hair, she remains steadfast in her spirit.
