A health expert has highlighted the importance of monitoring changes in hands that could indicate serious health conditions. Doctor Donald Grant, a GP and senior clinical advisor at The Independent Pharmacy, emphasised that the appearance and texture of hands can often reveal underlying health issues. He pointed out that observing specific signs in the hands is crucial to avoiding potential health risks.
Dr. Grant explained that various changes in nails can signal different health problems. For instance, pitted nails may indicate conditions like psoriasis, while yellow nails could be a sign of fungal infections or underlying health issues such as lung disease. Seeking medical advice from a GP is vital to accurately diagnose and treat any nail abnormalities.
Additionally, monitoring skin conditions on the hands is essential as changes in texture and appearance can occur when ill. Dr. Grant mentioned that palmar erythema, where the palms of the hands turn red, could indicate health conditions such as lymphoma or liver disease. Dry patches of skin may result from vitamin deficiencies or conditions like eczema, emphasising the importance of a balanced diet and suitable skincare products.
Stiff joints in the hands are often a sign of arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis, which can lead to swelling, pain, and reduced movement. Managing arthritis pain may involve using anti-inflammatory medication and engaging in appropriate exercise routines to alleviate stiffness. Dr. Grant advised individuals experiencing joint stiffness to seek medical advice for proper management.
Furthermore, experiencing cold hands could indicate poor circulation, anaemia, diabetes, or blood clots. Long-lasting changes in hand temperature should prompt individuals to seek medical attention to address any underlying health conditions effectively. Dr. Grant recommended consulting a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
Changes in finger size, such as thickening or widening, can also serve as indicators of serious health issues. Conditions like pulmonary fibrosis or sickle cell disease may cause finger abnormalities and should be promptly addressed by seeking urgent medical attention. By recognising and understanding these signs in the hands, individuals can access timely medical advice and treatments to promote well-being and prevent severe illnesses.
