Fast food giant McDonalds has announced plans to open more than 200 new restaurants across the UK and Ireland in a massive expansion programme for the high streets. The company, which currently operates 1,435 restaurants in the UK, will create around 24,000 new jobs over the next four years as part of the expansion. The move marks McDonalds largest expansion programme in over two decades and will be powered by a £1 billion investment by the chain and its franchisees.
With approximately four-fifths of its UK locations run by franchisees, McDonalds now employs over 170,000 workers. The expansion strategy includes a renewed focus on opening high street locations and testing new restaurant formats, such as smaller site formats and more “drive to restaurant sites. This initiative comes on the heels of McDonalds global target to build an additional 10,000 restaurants by 2027.
Alistair Macrow, chief executive officer of McDonalds UK&I, expressed satisfaction with the companys progress since its first UK opening in Woolwich 50 years ago. Macrow highlighted the brand’s integral role in local communities and its commitment to growth. He stated, Im delighted that in this milestone year we are able to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to growth, and announce the creation of new jobs across the country as we plan to open over 200 new restaurants over the next four years.
The plan underscores McDonalds dedication to enhancing customer value, investing in restaurant infrastructure, supporting UK suppliers, and launching community initiatives. The company aims to continue providing top value to its customers while adapting to evolving market needs and fostering growth opportunities for young people in local communities.
