A murder investigation has been initiated in the case of a missing woman from Cardiff, with a £20,000 reward now being offered for information. Charlene Hobbs, a 36-year-old resident of Riverside, Cardiff, has been missing since July 2024. The last confirmed sighting of her was through a mobile phone photograph taken at a property in Broadway, Adamsdown. South Wales Police declared on Monday that they are now treating Charlene’s disappearance as a murder case, and Crimestoppers is extending a reward of up to £20,000 for any details leading to the apprehension and conviction of those accountable.
Detective Chief Inspector Matt Powell of South Wales Police stated that despite rigorous investigations, there is no evidence confirming Charlene’s whereabouts or well-being. He disclosed, “While I have always maintained an open mind, the lack of evidence that Charlene is alive means that we are now treating her disappearance as a murder investigation.” Powell continued, “We are hoping that the Crimestoppers reward will help focus people’s minds. Charlene’s family continue to be updated, and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”
Efforts to discover Charlene’s location and the circumstances surrounding her disappearance are still ongoing. DCI Powell affirmed, “I still firmly believe that answers lie in the community, and that someone out there holds key information that will help us find Charlene.” He urged anyone with even minor details to come forward and assist in the investigation. Charlene, who has a distinctive dragon tattoo on her back, was last captured on CCTV at a Morrisons Local in Adamsdown on July 23, 2024.
Charlene’s family expressed their gratitude for the support and the reward, while still holding hope for her safe return. The community remains shocked by the development, especially considering a 45-year-old man arrested in connection with the case is currently on police bail. Meanwhile, a 43-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman have been released without charge. In their plea for information, South Wales Police highlighted that video footage or information from devices such as mobile phones, CCTV cameras, doorbells, or dash-cams could be crucial in the investigation.
The community members are also encouraged to join the newly launched WalesOnline WhatsApp group to stay updated on the latest developments. The platform offers real-time breaking news, top stories, and important updates, providing a direct channel for community engagement and information dissemination. As the case unfolds, authorities continue to seek any information that might lead to a breakthrough in locating Charlene and holding the responsible parties accountable for their actions.
