A 39-year-old landscaper, Des Longstaff, initially brushed off difficulties swallowing a sausage sandwich at work, attributing it to poor chewing. However, this seemingly harmless incident unveiled a much graver reality. Des has recently received a devastating prognosis of advanced stage-four oesophageal adenocarcinoma, a fast-spreading form of cancer that has infiltrated his liver, leaving him with a mere 12-month life expectancy. Determined to fight for more time with his five-year-old son, Des is actively exploring treatment options beyond conventional medical advice, which typically deems this cancer incurable.
Des recounted the pivotal moment when he knew something was amiss, “When I was eating it – I hadn’t put any sauce on or anything – it sort of got lodged in my oesophagus and I had a good pint of water but it still wouldn’t budge.” Troubled by escalating symptoms, Des sought medical consultation, leading to an urgent endoscopy after vomiting blood and discovering blood in his stool. Subsequent scans unveiled a daunting 35cm tumour in his lower oesophagus, later revealing that the cancer had metastasised to his liver, severely restricting treatment possibilities.
