Met Office issues weather warning as last of Hurricane Ernesto hits UK

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind across parts of Wales. Strong winds leading to potential travel disruption are expected during the early hours of Thursday morning, August 22. The warning, a residual effect of Hurricane Ernesto that hit the North Atlantic last week, will be in place from 1 am until 9 am on Thursday before easing from the west.

Exposed areas in parts of Wales could experience gusts of up to 60mph. The affected regions include central, Tayside, and Fife areas of Scotland, Strathclyde, the south-west, and the Lothian borders. Additionally, the warning covers the north-east and north-west of England, as well as north-westerly parts of Wales such as Conwy, Gwynedd, and the Isle of Anglesey.

The warning highlights the likelihood of very strong southwesterly winds in the early hours of Thursday, with gusts of 50 mph expected widely and reaching 60 mph in exposed locations. Particularly vulnerable areas include roads and bridges in north Wales and high ground in northern England and southern Scotland. The Met Office states that these gusts may be strong enough to cause trees to topple.

This latest weather alert follows a previous yellow warning issued for parts of Scotland for August 21, predicting heavy rain and strong winds that could result in flooding. The impacts of these weather conditions should be closely monitored, given the potential risks involved.
