Woman called her ex-partner a ‘rapist’ on social media and it landed her in big trouble

A 43-year-old woman, Rebecca Hooper, faced significant repercussions after branding her ex-partner as a ‘rapist’ in a series of social media posts. The situation unfolded in Cardiff Crown Court as Prosecutor Abdallah Barakat revealed that between December 19 and 24, 2024, Hooper took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to accuse her ex-partner of heinous acts. The posts included images of the man circled in red and yellow with captions labelling him as a ‘rapist.’ Hooper went further, mentioning personal details like the specific NHS hospital where the victim worked, their son’s rugby club, and the leisure centre the victim frequented for mental wellbeing. Additionally, Hooper alleged that the victim preyed on vulnerable women, further tarnishing his reputation. These actions are an outright breach of the ten-year restraining order issued against her in July 2024, which stemmed from stalking and similar accusations against the same ex-partner. For her prior offences, Hooper had received a 16-month suspended sentence, which she also violated through these social media posts. In a victim impact statement, the ex-partner expressed the profound distress caused by Hooper’s actions. The victim, who has children, details the trauma endured by his family due to the public nature of the accusations. The victim’s rugby club, a significant part of his life, now feels off-limits, and he must always have a companion at work out of fear of encountering Hooper. The victim’s anxiety extends to concerns for his family’s safety and property, referencing past incidents where Hooper had tampered with their vehicle. James Evans, representing Hooper, shed light on his client’s mental health struggles, highlighting anxiety, depression, and a personality disorder. The defence explained that Hooper and her partner intended to relocate to avoid any future interactions with the victim. During sentencing, Judge Eugene Egan condemned Hooper’s actions and the ensuing distress inflicted on the victim. The judge emphasised the seriousness of Hooper’s breach of the restraining order, urging her to grasp the harm caused by her defamatory statements. Hooper received a ten-month suspended prison sentence, a £500 fine, 200 hours of unpaid work, and ten rehabilitation activity days. The court’s decision aimed to hold Hooper accountable for her actions, emphasizing the need to cease any further harmful behaviour.
