A net-zero energy whisky distillery and eco-tourism business have been recognised as the top small businesses in the UK for their efforts in driving ‘green growth’. The accolade was awarded to York’s Cooper King Distillery and Hoe Grange Holidays, with both businesses receiving £5,000 grant prizes at the ‘Green Growth Awards’. These awards were launched by Small Business Britain and BT to highlight UK entrepreneurs who are leading the way in sustainable practices.
Chris Jaume, co-founder of York’s Cooper King Distillery, expressed his delight at being honoured with the award, emphasizing the team’s commitment to producing sustainable spirits. The distillery, founded by Abbie and Chris Jaume in 2016, stands as England’s first net-zero energy whisky distillery and has introduced carbon-negative gin to its offerings. Cooper King Distillery has not only reduced its environmental impact but also donated a portion of revenue to environmental causes, demonstrating how sustainability can drive business success.
Hoe Grange Holidays, a family-run eco-tourism business in the Peak District founded by David and Felicity Brown in 2006, was also recognised for its dedication to sustainability. The business is powered entirely by renewable energy sources such as wind turbines and solar panels, setting a high standard for eco-friendly tourism in the region. Caroline Brown, co-owner of Hoe Grange Holidays, expressed gratitude for the award and highlighted the importance of sustainability in their business operations.
The Green Growth Awards aim to showcase how integrating green practices into business operations can lead to not only reduced environmental impact but also unlock growth and profitability opportunities. Michelle Ovens CBE, founder of Small Business Britain, underscored the significance of sustainability in driving business success and building a greener, more resilient economy. The awards ceremony, held at BT’s Headquarters in London, celebrated the achievements of these small businesses in spearheading sustainable growth.
Small businesses play a pivotal role in the UK economy, with an estimated representation of half of the country’s business emissions. Collaborative efforts such as the Green Growth Awards are essential in empowering small businesses to embrace sustainable practices and explore growth opportunities. The partnership between Small Business Britain and BT aims to support businesses in understanding their environmental impact and driving innovation towards sustainability.
Both Cooper King Distillery and Hoe Grange Holidays will receive a £5,000 sustainability grant to further develop their green initiatives and serve as inspirations for other small businesses. Chris Sims, Chief Commercial Officer at BT, lauded the commitment of small businesses to sustainability and expressed pride in partnering with Small Business Britain to celebrate their achievements.
