Brits are faced with the challenge of moving almost half a tonne of belongings into a new home, according to a recent study by Wales Online. The research, based on a poll of 1,000 adults who have moved house in the last decade, revealed that the average house move day involves carrying 32 boxes, walking 9,440 steps, and lifting a total weight of 466kg.
An astonishing 34 per cent of respondents identified the official move day as the most challenging part of the process, attributed to the physical exertion of lifting and walking up stairs. On this day alone, movers climb an average of 19 flights of stairs, take five caffeine breaks, and drop four items. It typically takes about eight days for individuals to fully recover from the strenuous activities involved in moving house.
To assist with the physical demands of moving, Domino’s has announced a home removal service trial scheduled for Friday, August 30 – known as the most popular day for moving house in the UK. The study also revealed that a takeaway pizza is a common choice for the first meal after the move, with 50 per cent opting for a hot slice.
Nearly four in 10 participants admitted they would struggle to move house without help, with 62 per cent preferring to hire a removal company. Price, professionalism, and friendly service were cited as the top three factors when choosing a removal company. Additionally, 33 per cent of respondents shared that their first meal in a new home is usually consumed on the floor, surrounded by moving boxes.
Overall, 30 per cent of people dread the process of moving house, with movers reportedly locking themselves out of their old or new property an average of five times. Furthermore, up to four pieces of furniture from the old house may not fit into the new one, adding to the challenges of relocation.
For those planning a move in August and seeking assistance from Domino’s, an email stating the request should be sent to [email protected] by Friday, August 23. The statistics of a house move include carrying 32 boxes, walking 9,440 steps, lifting 466kg of weight, dropping four boxes, drinking five cups of tea, climbing 20 flights of stairs, and needing eight days to recover.
