Emma Raducanu has stirred up controversy at Wimbledon’s All England Club by reportedly breaking a 150-year-old rule. The 2021 US Open champion has been accused of defying the long-standing dress code, which requires players to wear all-white attire during matches and practice sessions at SW19. This rule extends to the main Grand Slam event in the summer. Despite the strict regulations, Raducanu has been spotted practising on the courts in outfits that do not adhere to the traditional dress code.
According to reports, the 22-year-old tennis star has been seen wearing non-white attire while practising at the All England Club, sparking outrage among club members. The Daily Mail highlighted that her behaviour of wearing “whatever she wants” has incited anger among the club’s members. The rules at the All England Club, established in the 1880s, explicitly state that players must wear almost entirely white tennis attire when on the courts. Even a minor deviation from this code can attract attention, as seen in Raducanu’s case.
While an amendment was made in 2023 to allow female players to wear dark undershorts for period concerns, the rules regarding attire remain stringent. The permitted white outfits must not include off-white or cream colours, with only a 10mm trim of another single colour allowed around necklines or cuffs. Despite these specific guidelines, Raducanu has reportedly appeared on the courts in a pink outfit, raising eyebrows and criticism from some members of the club.
One club member expressed their discontent by stating, “It’s so unfair. Who does she think she is? Just because she’s won the US Open doesn’t mean she can wear whatever she wants.” This backlash against Raducanu’s outfit choices mirrors previous instances of players deviating from the traditional dress code. In 2022, Nick Kyrgios caused a stir by wearing non-white shoes and caps before changing into compliant attire. Similarly, Roger Federer received reprimand for sporting orange-soled shoes on the prestigious Wimbledon courts.
Raducanu’s actions have reignited the debate on adherence to Wimbledon’s strict dress code and its historical significance. As a young and accomplished player, her choices are closely scrutinised, and any deviation from the norm is met with criticism. The clash between tradition and individual expression in the world of tennis attire remains a topic of discussion among players, fans, and officials. The controversy surrounding Raducanu’s attire serves as a reminder of the importance placed on upholding traditions while also allowing room for modern interpretations in the sport.
