A young student’s battle with testicular cancer has gained attention after he revealed that his GP had mistaken the disease for a sexually transmitted infection multiple times. Oli Penno, 19, from Launceston in Cornwall, initially sought medical help in October 2023 when he experienced swelling and pain in one of his testicles. Despite visiting his GP three times, he was told it was an infection and was even advised to get tested for an STI and urinary tract infection. However, it wasn’t until a trip to A&E in January 2024 that Oli received the official testicular cancer diagnosis, with the disease having already spread to his abdomen and lungs.
The misdiagnosis by his GP left Oli feeling bitter about missing out on his university experience as he had to undergo surgery and chemotherapy. However, he now looks back with gratitude that his treatment has given him more time. Reflecting on his journey, Oli expressed his belief that cancer changes individuals both internally and externally, making them stronger. He advised others to challenge medical professionals if they feel something isn’t right, as mistakes can happen. Oli’s resilience throughout his battle has given him confidence to support other young people facing similar diagnoses.
Following his surgery to remove his right testicle and subsequent chemotherapy, Oli faced uncertainties about potential side effects like infertility and decreased testosterone production. However, he persevered through the challenges with the help of his supportive friends, family, girlfriend, and medical team. Despite setbacks post-treatment that led to hospital admissions, Oli emerged cancer-free and embarked on a fundraising campaign for the Teenage Cancer Trust, which he raised over £4,000 for through a physical challenge.
As Oli continues regular check-ups and tests to ensure his health remains clear, he hopes to raise awareness and support for others battling cancer.
