Man Imprisoned for Fatally Stamping on Pet Cat
A man from Barry has been sentenced to jail and prohibited from owning animals after mistreating two of his cats, resulting in the death of one of them. Daniel Bradley Jones took one of his pet cats, Maisey, to the vet in September 2023, claiming he had accidentally stepped on her at home. Unfortunately, Maisey arrived at the vet’s with a wet coat and was declared dead upon arrival. The vet discovered significant trauma on Maisey’s body, consistent with being forcibly stepped or stamped on. Maisey had chest trauma, jaw bruising, a protruding left eye, blood in her mouth, and fractures in her shoulder blade, rib, and lung. It was concluded that Maisey likely died due to a collapsed lung and respiratory failure resulting from the chest trauma.
In November 2023, Jones, aged 27, brought his other cat, Odin, to the vet, claiming Odin had collided with an Xbox on a shelf three days earlier. Later, Jones changed his story, saying the Xbox was on the floor. Odin was found to be wet and hypothermic, with head and spinal injuries, displaying signs of distress. Despite the vet’s advice against it, Jones had bathed both cats, as they exhibited nervous behaviour when held. A vet report later confirmed that the injuries suffered by Maisey and Odin were not consistent with Jones’ explanations, indicating physical abuse. An expert veterinarian determined that both cats had endured suffering due to abuse.
Jones pleaded guilty to three Animal Welfare Act offences and was sentenced at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court in February. Mitigation presented in court revealed that Jones had mental health issues related to cannabis use. He received a 40-week jail term, a £187 victim surcharge, and a five-year ban on pet ownership. Reflecting on the case, RSPCA inspector Miranda Albinson lamented the abuse suffered by the vulnerable kittens under Jones’ care. While Maisey tragically lost her life, Odin, who has since been rehomed, was spared from further harm.
