A disturbance at a Cardiff library led to a violent altercation where a man was chased and assaulted with an extension lead. The incident took place at a Cardiff University library, where security guard Mahdi El Tahir, 40, assaulted his colleague Steven Mahoney after an accusation was made against him for “sleeping on the job”. The confrontation resulted in Mr. Mahoney sustaining an injury to his eye during the altercation. The two individuals had worked together for five years, and tensions escalated during a night shift on November 1, 2023, when Mr. Mahoney threatened to report El Tahir for sleeping on duty. The situation quickly spiraled out of control, leading to a physical confrontation between the two colleagues.
According to reports from the sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, the altercation began when El Tahir responded to Mr. Mahoney’s accusation by asserting that he was not his superior and proceeded to lash out physically. The prosecutor, Emily Jermin, detailed how El Tahir accused Mr. Mahoney of racism and proceeded to push, chase, and assault him with an extension lead. The victim, Mr. Mahoney, expressed in a victim personal statement read to the court the impact of the incident on his physical and emotional well-being, stating that he had lost confidence in trusting his co-workers due to the accusations made against him.
Following the incident, Mahdi El Tahir pleaded guilty to a section 20 assault, acknowledging his actions during the altercation. Despite being of previous good character, El Tahir faced sentencing by Recorder Neil Owen-Casey, who handed down a sentence of five months imprisonment, suspended for 12 months. In addition to the suspended sentence, El Tahir was ordered to undertake a 10-day rehabilitation activity requirement, perform 50 hours of unpaid work, and pay £150 in costs and £200 in compensation to the victim, Mr. Mahoney. The court also heard that El Tahir’s ability to work in the security industry had been impacted by the incident, potentially affecting his role as the main financial provider for his wife and four children.
