The initiative has already made strides, with 49 arrests, 38 stop-and-searches, and 17 community resolution notices issued in Newport. Despite this progress, Tory councillor Will Routley raised ongoing issues including groups of youths on bikes, drug usage, and aggressive begging in the city center. He questioned authorities on their approach to such individuals, urging for their removal from the streets. Superintendent White assured that the police are proactive in addressing offenders, although statistics may not fully align with public perceptions.
While reports of antisocial behavior have plateaued, overall crime rates in the city have decreased by 9%. Violent offenses, vehicle-related crimes, and burglaries have seen a drop, although there has been a rise in weapon-related incidents, largely attributed to proactive stop-and-search operations. Council leader Dimitri Batrouni underscored the collaborative effort between law enforcement and the council to combat crime. Acknowledging the importance of residents feeling safe, Batrouni emphasized the declining trend in criminal activities.
Labour councillor Gavin Horton, a local business owner, commended the police for their swift response to recent incidents near his establishment. Superintendent White also highlighted positive news, revealing plans to bolster the police force with new Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) in upcoming recruitment drives.
