Welsh Railway Line Named among the Best in the World by National Geographic
The Heart of Wales Line has recently been honoured with a prestigious title by National Geographic, which named it one of the best train journeys globally. This railway route, stretching from Craven Arms, England to Llanelli, Wales, has garnered recognition for its leisurely pace and captivating scenery. The three-and-a-half-hour journey offers passengers a unique experience, showcasing heathery mountains, cascading rivers, and ancient castles that loom majestically along the railway tracks.
National Geographic’s list of exemplary train trips includes renowned routes like the La Dolce Vita Orient Express and the Norient Express, with the Heart of Wales Line standing out for its charm and tranquillity. Among the selected destinations is the Hiram Bingham Line in Peru, which traverses the Sacred Valley of the Incas, leading travellers to the breathtaking Machu Picchu. Additionally, the Rocky Mountaineer in the US made the cut for its striking red rock landscapes and picturesque alpine views between Moab and Denver.
Describing the unique appeal of the Heart of Wales Line, National Geographic highlighted its nostalgic ambience as a railway frozen in time. The single-track railway cuts through the heart of the Welsh countryside, crossing ornate Victorian viaducts and rustic stations where passengers signal for the train to halt with a simple gesture. Enthusiasts of railways appreciate its unassuming allure, while holidaymakers can use it to explore the serene Cambrian region, disembarking in quaint towns like Llandrindod Wells and discovering historic fortresses such as Dinefwr and Llandovery.
Noteworthy commendation for the only UK railway on the esteemed list, National Geographic characterised the Heart of Wales Line as a journey that invites travellers to relish the unhurried pace of travel, rarely exceeding 30mph. The route allows for peaceful exploration of the Cambrian hinterland, offering access to the windswept uplands of Elenydd and inviting visitors to embark on invigorating hikes amidst the treeless slopes that overlook the railway tracks. Seats on this captivating journey start from as little as £18, providing an affordable and rewarding travel experience for passengers.
Transport for Wales marked a significant development for the Heart of Wales Line on February 25 by introducing the first of six refurbished cycle-friendly trains. These trains, scheduled to be fully operational by summer, will accommodate up to 12 bicycles or e-bikes per journey, catering to both cyclists and regular passengers. With a total of 108 seats available on the cycle carriages, this initiative aims to promote sustainable and active travel options while enhancing the overall travel experience on the scenic Heart of Wales Line.
