Beloved Cardiff Chef Decides to Focus on Health After Cancer Battle
A well-respected chef in Cardiff, Tony Frawley, has made the heartfelt decision to close down his much-loved restaurant, 591 by Anatoni’s, to prioritize his health following a challenging battle with stage four oesophagus cancer. Tony announced on Instagram that the restaurant on Cowbridge Rd E will cease operations on Saturday, March 8, as he continues his recovery journey. The news has sparked an outpouring of support from the local community who have cherished the pizzeria.
Tony shared in his emotional video message, “After chatting to the family and the children and close friends, we decided it’s probably best now to retire, hang up the apron and try to rebuild my health and try and rebuild back to a level of normality as much as I can.” His cancer diagnosis came just over a year ago, not long after launching 591 by Anatoni’s. Reflecting on his health struggles, Tony recalled experiencing severe chest pains and difficulty breathing, leading to the diagnosis. He highlighted the importance of seeking medical attention promptly, acknowledging that early intervention saved his life.
Following his diagnosis, Tony underwent a rigorous treatment regimen, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and a complex 13-and-a-half-hour surgery to remove the tumour. While the surgery was initially successful, he faced complications, including a severe lung infection that required an extended period on a ventilator. Despite the challenges, Tony expressed profound gratitude towards the National Health Service (NHS) and the dedicated medical team who supported him throughout his recovery.
In his video, Tony expressed appreciation for the Cardiff community’s unwavering support of Anatoni’s, emphasizing that the pizzeria belonged to the people of Cardiff. He expressed deep gratitude, saying, “We’ve always maintained that Anatoni’s is owned by the people of Cardiff. They’ve always supported it, it’s your pizzeria, it was never really ours… You really supported it and gave us 100% and we’re eternally grateful for that.” This sentiment underscores the strong bond between the restaurant and its patrons.
Tony’s decision to step away from the restaurant to focus on his health serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of self-care and prioritizing well-being, especially in the face of formidable challenges. His story is a testament to resilience, community support, and the power of determination in overcoming adversity. As Cardiff bids farewell to a beloved culinary figure, the legacy of Anatoni’s and Tony’s dedication to his craft will endure in the hearts of many.
The closure of 591 by Anatoni’s marks the end of an era for Cardiff’s dining scene, but it also signifies a new chapter for Tony as he embarks on a recovery journey. The decision to prioritize health and well-being is a courageous one, resonating with many who have faced similar battles. Tony’s story serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing each moment. Cardiff’s culinary landscape may change, but the impact of Tony Frawley and Anatoni’s on the community will be remembered for years to come.
