Drunk Woman Stabs Victim in Chest with Glass Bottle at Rugby Club in Wales
A disturbing incident unfolded at the Brynamman Rugby Club near Ammanford in Wales when a drunken woman, identified as Jodie Winkley, 27, stabbed another woman, Jenna Elliott, in the chest with a glass bottle. The attack, which left the victim with permanent scars, occurred on July 1, 2023. The victim was left bleeding from her chest after the assailant dragged a broken bottle across her skin, causing serious harm.
Reports from the sentencing hearing at Swansea Crown Court revealed that the victim and the attacker were not acquainted prior to the incident. Throughout the night, Winkley was seen giving Ms. Elliott hostile glances. The situation escalated when, at midnight, Winkley pushed past the victim in a hostile manner. Ms. Elliott confronted her, only to be mocked and insulted by the defendant, who even went as far as physically assaulting her.
The victim, understandably shocked and distressed, sought refuge outside for a cigarette. However, Winkley followed her, maintaining her aggressive behaviour and confrontations. When confronted by the victim, Winkley’s response was to escalate the situation further by grabbing a glass bottle, smashing it, and then stabbing Ms. Elliott in the chest while wearing a smirk.
The victim, feeling intense pain and shock, was left to deal with the aftermath as Winkley callously ran away from the scene. Ms. Elliott, realizing the severity of her injuries, questioned the attacker, to which Winkley responded with a feeble apology. This heinous act led Ms. Elliott to seek medical treatment for a 3cm laceration on her chest, which required adhesive strips for closure.
Upon her arrest, Winkley pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and expressed remorse for her actions. During the court proceedings, the victim’s emotional turmoil and the lasting impact of the attack on her life were revealed through a victim personal statement. Ms. Elliott described feeling constant emotional distress, anger, and anxiety, with the scarring a perpetual reminder of the traumatic incident.
In considering mitigation, the court acknowledged Winkley’s lack of a criminal record and the difficult life circumstances she had faced. Her legal counsel highlighted the potential for rehabilitation and remorse shown by the defendant. Consequently, Judge Catherine Richards imposed a suspended sentence of nine months, along with stringent requirements for rehabilitation, community service, mental health treatment, and a restraining order.
